How to Get to the Romantic Zone
The Romantic Zone sits in the southern part of downtown Puerto Vallarta, just south of El Centro. The Río Cuale marks the northern edge, and the neighborhood stretches south toward the beach areas beyond Olas Altas. If you're staying in the Hotel Zone, it is an easy trip.
The public blue buses that run along the main coastal road are the most affordable option, costing around 10 pesos. Look for buses marked "Centro" or "Olas Altas" and you'll be dropped within walking distance of the neighborhood.
Taxi works well throughout Puerto Vallarta from most Hotel Zone spots and the ride takes around 15 to 25 minutes, depending on traffic.
Once you arrive, most of what you want is within walking distance. The cobblestone streets are compact and the main areas, from Los Muertos Beach to Restaurant Row, sit within a few walkable blocks.
Los Muertos Beach
Los Muertos Beach is the geographic and social anchor of the Romantic Zone. It is one of the city's most visited beaches, with gentle waves, warm water most of the year, and enough space to handle busy days.
The vibe is lively and local. The beach vendors are part of the scene, selling grilled seafood, fruit with chile, and traditional drinks like tuba. You'll also hear strolling musicians playing for tips.
Los Muertos is also known for its strong LGBTQ+ scene, which helps define the Romantic Zone's welcoming, social feel. Mornings tend to be calmer, midday brings families and beach activity, and sunset pulls everyone toward the pier.
Los Muertos Pier
Los Muertos Pier is one of the most photographed landmarks in Puerto Vallarta. The current design was completed in 2013, and the structure's sail-like silhouette stands out at sunrise and sunset.
For sunset viewing, this is one of the best spots in the city. The pier looks straight out across Banderas Bay, framed by the Sierra Madre mountains, and the crowd that gathers each evening gives it an easy, communal energy.
After dark, multicolored lights illuminate the structure, and it often becomes a natural meeting point during holidays.
The pier is also practical. It is the main departure point for water taxis headed to beaches and villages south of town, including Yelapa.
Tips to Spend the Day
We like to think of the Romantic Zone as a neighborhood you can sample in small bites. A short walk, a coffee stop, an art gallery, then the beach.
Here are a few daytime classics.
Walk the Malecón boardwalk. The Malecón runs along Banderas Bay with public sculptures, artisan vendors, and wide-open water views. It sits near the northern edge of the Romantic Zone, so it is easy to pair with an Old Town meal.
Visit the Cuale market. On Cuale River Island, you'll find stalls selling handcrafts, jewelry, and clothing. We recommend taking your time and chatting with vendors. You'll often learn what a piece means and where it came from.
Browse the Farmers Market. During high season (November through April), the Olas Altas Farmers Market takes over Lázaro Cárdenas Park every Saturday from 9 AM to 2 PM. Expect organic foods, artisan breads, cheeses, Mexican handicrafts, and live music. The market does not operate during the summer months.
Where We Eat and Drink
The dining scene is one of the best reasons to spend time in the Romantic Zone. Basilio Badillo Street, often called Restaurant Row, is the main dining corridor. You'll find everything from simple tacos to chef-driven menus within a few blocks.
What we love most is the range. Contemporary Mexican kitchens, Asian fusion, Mediterranean bistros, and vegan cafés sit alongside late-night street stands. Street food is part of the neighborhood's identity, especially after the bars close.
Coffee culture is growing, too. Puerto Vallarta is surrounded by coffee-growing regions, and you'll find specialty cafés alongside traditional café de olla served with cinnamon and piloncillo.
One practical tip for peak season is to plan ahead. Popular restaurants fill up fast, and earlier seatings can be the easiest to get.
Gallery Nights Worth Planning
The Romantic Zone's gallery scene runs on a well-organized seasonal calendar. Two recurring events are worth planning around.
The ArtWalk runs every Wednesday evening from 6 PM to 10 PM during high season (late October through late May).
The South Side Shuffle focuses specifically on the south side. It runs every other Friday from 6 PM to 9 PM between November and April, with galleries, jewelry stores, and boutiques opening their doors along Basilio Badillo and surrounding blocks.
Both events are seasonal and do not operate during the summer months. If you're visiting between November and May, we recommend picking one evening for galleries, then finishing with dinner in the Romantic Zone.
The LGBTQ+ Scene
The LGBTQ+ community is a cultural foundation of the Romantic Zone. The neighborhood's reputation as a welcoming destination has deep roots.
Puerto Vallarta is widely recognized as a favorite international destination for LGBTQ+ travelers, and the inclusive atmosphere shows up in everyday life across the neighborhood. It is welcoming to all travelers, and that mix of people is a big part of what makes the Romantic Zone feel so social.

How the Nights Unfold
This is where the Romantic Zone really separates itself from other Puerto Vallarta neighborhoods. The evening scene is walkable, varied, and it builds gradually through the night.
5 to 7 PM. Sunset at the pier, then a drink nearby. Rooftop bars often start up later in the week.
7 to 9 PM. Dinner along Restaurant Row. Piano bars and live entertainment venues open for the evening.
9 PM to midnight. The bar scene reaches full energy. Live music spills onto sidewalks, cocktail bars fill up, and the streets stay social.
Midnight to 3 AM. Dance clubs and cabaret venues keep the night going.
The big advantage is how concentrated it all is. Most nightlife sits within a few blocks, so you can walk between venues instead of coordinating rides.
Is the Romantic Zone Safe?
We find the Romantic Zone is generally comfortable for travelers who use standard city awareness. Carry only what you need when going out, stay on well-lit streets late at night, and use official taxis or rideshare apps.

Picking the Right Season
Romantic Zone delivers year-round. The feel changes with the season, and that gives you different ways to enjoy it.
During the drier season (December through April), you get mild days with cooler evenings. This is when weekly cultural events are in full swing, and it is also peak season for humpback whales in Banderas Bay. If you're visiting during these months, keep an eye on the water. You can sometimes spot breaches right from Los Muertos Beach.
May and October are great shoulder-season months with fewer crowds and better value. Some weekly events wind down or ramp back up, and the days still feel beach-friendly.
June through September brings warmer temperatures, more humidity, and afternoon rain showers. Prices drop, the neighborhood stays active, and it is a solid time to mix city nights with a day on the water when the bay is calm.
