Sayulita is a beautiful coastal town full of fun and festivities. This beach town has a reputation for being a surfer's paradise and is becoming more and more popular among visitors. You'll find fantastic food, funky art, great surfing, and friendly locals, as well as travelers who just don't want to leave. The town is small enough to walk completely around in about 40 minutes, but there is plenty to keep you occupied and/or relaxed indefinitely.
You can learn to surf in a calmer area of Sayulita Beach, try paddle boarding, or join the more experienced surfers where the bigger waves are found. You can also hit one of the incredible restaurants where you'll get large portions of delicious dishes.
You can sit and people-watch in this surf town for as long as you like, or try fresh fish tacos from street vendors on a short walk and sip cocktails under an umbrella. Don't forget to check out the sea turtles!
Sayulita is one of a few towns in Mexico that earned the title of “Pueblo Mágico” or “magic town”, a denomination given to places that have a special charm that makes them unique, either because of their architecture, its traditions, or its culture.
The case of Sayulita is more about its hippie-chic surfer vibe and a small-town feel that invites you to live (at least for a few days) a laid simpler life.
Where Is Sayulita Beach?
Sayulita Beach or Playa Sayulita, is a hidden gem located on the coast of Mexico, just north of downtown Puerto Vallarta. This charming town is nestled in a lush jungle landscape and boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in the area.
Sayulita Beach is a small but vibrant community that is known for its relaxed and bohemian atmosphere, attracting surfers, artists, and travelers from all over the world.
Whether you're looking to catch some waves or simply soak up the sun, Sayulita Beach is the perfect destination for anyone seeking a laid-back beach vacation with a touch of authentic Mexican culture.
Puerto Vallarta to Sayulita
Sayulita is about 40 km (25 miles) north of Puerto Vallarta and is found in the state of Nayarit in Mexico. Sayulita Beach is on the Pacific Ocean side of Mexico.
From the Puerto Vallarta airport, it will typically take just under 1 hour by car, or bus line to get to the fun that Sayulita has to offer.
When Should I Go to Sayulita?
There is no bad season to visit Sayulita, but depending on what you want from your vacation, there may be better times for you. If you visit after November and before April, it is less humid, but still plenty warm.
During September, the town is a little quieter since the main season has died down, but the shops and restaurants are still open. Everything is green and you have a better chance of spotting birds and butterflies that are otherwise scarce.
The rainy season is typically June through October, and you will most likely encounter more tourists and backpackers arriving during these months. It also gets pretty busy around New Year's, Easter, and Spring Break.
However, if you come during late October and the first days of November, you may get to experience Dia de Los Muertos, which is an incredible opportunity to experience authentic Mexican traditions and culture.
