Pregnant guests go into the private program. Measure a borderline child at the hotel before you leave, since a few centimeters decides which program a nine-year-old joins.

Swim with Dolphins Puerto Vallarta asks for guests aged 5 and up and at least 1.20 meters tall (roughly 4 feet), with life jackets provided for the whole session. You spend 40 minutes in the water alongside Pacific Bottlenose dolphins, sharing a hug and a kiss and slipping on a viewing mask to catch their clicks and whistles under the surface. When Someone Would Rather Stand Than Swim
Toddlers and adults who would rather keep both feet on the bottom belong on the platform, where the water sits at your waist, and the dolphin comes to you. Dolphin Encounter requires no swimming skills at any age and takes children from age 1, with children aged 1 to 4 joining a participating adult. You spend 20 minutes petting, hugging, and kissing playful dolphins while a Marine Mammal Specialist shares how they communicate and bond.
Teens and adults who want to spend their time with the training team rather than in a single session can join Marine Mammal Trainer for a Day, open to guests aged 12 and up. Over five hours behind the scenes at the Dolphin Center, you learn hand signals, work alongside our Marine Mammal Specialists on real training sessions, and still fit in a dolphin swim, a platform interaction, and a sea lion encounter along the way.
Kids-Only and Private Sessions
Younger children can get in the water while you stay dry. Dolphin Kids takes children aged 4 to 9 into a shallow pool at our Dolphin Center, with a minimum depth of 1 meter. For 20 minutes, they pet, hug, kiss, and play with the dolphins while a Marine Mammal Specialist keeps the session age-appropriate, and parents watch from the designated observation area.
Families who want the specialist's full attention, or whose swimming ability varies across the group, book privately. Private Dolphin Swim is the only program we run for pregnant guests, takes up to 6, and gives you 30 minutes of personalized interaction with a dolphin shaped around what your group wants from it, including free time to bond after the guided part.
Why Sunscreen Stays at the Hotel
No sunscreen of any kind is allowed during a dolphin swim, including biodegradable formulas. The oils and residues harm the dolphins, so sun-protective clothing takes their place. Biodegradable formulas break down over days, not in the seconds after you step into the water. Whatever is on your skin comes off the moment you enter, long before any of that breakdown begins. The residue stays in the water the animals live in.
Chemicals in that water, used inappropriately, may damage the dolphins' eyes and skin, which is why habitat water quality is monitored. UV filter chemicals also accumulate in the tissue of marine mammals, dolphins included, and pass to young animals. None of that is undone by a label.
Fabric does the job instead, so wear a long-sleeve UPF 50+ rash guard and wait out of direct sun in the observation areas between water time. Apply nothing at all to your skin on the morning of the swim.
What To Wear on Swim Day
Arrive with your swimsuit on under light clothing, and you will move through check-in faster than anyone still queuing for a changing room. Choose swimwear that stays put, because you will be climbing in and out of the water repeatedly.
Over it, a long-sleeve UPF 50+ rash guard covers most of the skin the sun would otherwise reach. A light cover-up handles the walk between buildings and the wait before your session.
Water shoes with grooved rubber soles keep you upright on wet decks. Flip-flops turn slippery the moment they get wet. Tie long hair back before you leave the hotel, and skip anything in it that could work loose.
Prescription glasses come off before you get in, and so do contact lenses, since water and lenses don't mix well. Snug prescription swim goggles solve that. Pack a case for the lenses in your day bag.
Leave jewelry, watches, and hearing aids in the locker. This is the animals' rule, not ours. Anything that can fall off can be swallowed by a curious dolphin.

Plan to arrive 45 minutes before your scheduled start time. That window gives you time to check in, change and store your belongings in a locker, and it is the part people underestimate.
Programs typically begin with an educational session from our Marine Mammal Specialists before anyone enters the water. In-water minutes and total program length differ because the total includes the briefing and everything that follows outside the water, including changing and the photo review.
Afterward, you rinse off, collect your things from the locker, and change into dry clothes. Companions who stayed dry can meet you there.
Getting There From Your Hotel
The Marine Mammal Center is in Nuevo Vallarta, about 16 kilometers (10 miles) north of Puerto Vallarta. A clear run is usually 20 to 30 minutes, and during busier hours, allow closer to 50 minutes, so budget the wider window and add your arrival buffer on top.
Street taxis are available throughout Puerto Vallarta, and public buses run up the coast toward Nuevo Vallarta. Uber, DiDi, and inDrive operate here, though coverage on the Nayarit side of the bay is not guaranteed, so confirm your ride rather than assuming one appears. The whole Banderas Bay corridor shares one time zone, so there is no clock change between your hotel and the center.
