Because the Hidden Beach is a highly protected federal ecological reserve, its access is strictly regulated to ensure its survival for generations to come. We embrace these guidelines as part of our commitment to the planet:
To preserve the pristine state of the sanctuary, the federal government enforces strict protocols. Guests participate as conscious explorers:
A rare glimpse into a protected geological wonder, where marine life meets the legacy of Pacific conservation.
Rising from the deep waters just off the coast of Punta Mita, the Marietas Islands stand as a monument to nature’s raw architectural power. Born from ancient volcanic activity and sculpted by centuries of oceanic currents, this protected archipelago is a sanctuary of biodiversity. At its heart lies the world-renowned Playa del Amor—The Hidden Beach—a breathtaking crater open to the sky, enclosing a secluded shoreline of pristine golden sand and crystalline turquoise waters.
As the leading authority in regional exploration, Vallarta Adventures grants you private access to this ecological fortress. This is not merely a sightseeing trip; it is an active, immersive expedition designed for those who wish to experience one of the planet's most photographed natural anomalies through the lens of strict preservation and absolute reverence.
The Marietas Islands are a vital nesting ground for the iconic blue-footed booby—a rare avian species found almost exclusively here and in the Galápagos Islands. To walk inside the crater is to step into an evolutionary time capsule.
Our private vessel navigates to the outer edge of the Marietas' Love Beach. From there, to protect the delicate coral reefs below, guests slip into the water and swim approximately 200 feet (75 meters) through a majestic natural sea cave that serves as the portal to the Hidden Beach.
Along the rocky cliffs, look for a vibrant ecosystem hosting over 100 species of seabirds, including pelicans, gulls, and the famous blue-footed boobies. Beneath the surface, a kaleidoscope of reef fish thrives in a protected underwater world.
The rugged beauty of the islas marietas is a testament to ancient volcanic activity that shaped the bay during the Cretaceous period. This islands national park is celebrated for its dramatic rock arch structures and intricate caves carved by the relentless force of the ocean. Nestled inside one of these hollowed rock structures is the hidden beach, a natural wonder and secluded beach. Playa Escondida is also known as Playa del Amor or Lover's Beach. Reclaimed by nature, the beach is about 80 feet long and nestled inside a volcanic crater, transforming a geological anomaly into a symbol of resilience and a proud piece of Mexican national heritage.
As a highly protected sanctuary, the marietas islands national park acts as a crucial refuge for both marine and terrestrial wildlife. Above the surface, the cliffs are alive with a large variety of flora and fauna. This is the breeding ground for the famous blue footed booby, an enigmatic bird species that shares its nesting habits almost exclusively with the Galápagos islands. Recognizing its immense ecological value, Islas Marietas were declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2008, ensuring the protection of its rare avian colonies from the negative impact of traditional tourism.
Beneath the waves, the islands hidden beach is surrounded by a thriving underwater biosphere. The nutrient-rich currents of the bay sustain a kaleidoscope of tropical fish, elusive octopuses, and reef coral colonies. While snorkeling along the outer perimeter, travelers frequently encounter sea turtles gliding through the depths and majestic manta rays sweeping across the sandy floor. The ocean surrounding the national park undergoes a dramatic seasonal shift; humpback whales can often be seen near the Marieta Islands from December to March, making the journey to the beach
Securing beach access to the sanctuary is an art dictated entirely by nature and strict conservation. The opening to the crater is a low-hanging rock cavern; therefore, entering is highly dependent on the low tide. When the tide is optimal, small groups of visitors can safely swim from the boat through the siphon. These unique experiences include swimming with a life vest and helmet through a cave. Because safety and preservation are our highest priorities, federal regulations dictate that access to Hidden Beach is limited to 116 visitors daily, preventing overcrowding and ensuring an intimate experience for every person.
Our partnership with environmental authorities ensures that your hidden beach punta mita experience actively funds the sanctuary's survival. Environmental consciousness here is deeply rooted in history: the islands were closed to the public in May 2016 due to damage caused by unregulated mass tourism. Today, under strict management, active coral replanting efforts are underway to restore damaged ecosystems. Nearby landmarks, such as Nopalera Beach, are also placed off limits periodically. By choosing an authorized tour operator like Vallarta Adventures, your conservation fees directly support these long-term stewardship initiatives.
Departing from Punta Mita aboard a private, roofed boat, this exciting eco-adventure invites you to swim through majestic rock archways and cave formations to reach the iconic Lover’s Beach, also known as Hidden Beach. Led by bilingual specialists, you will stroll along this secluded natural reserve to capture the perfect photo, admire extraordinary landscapes, and discover over 100 marine species and the rare blue-footed booby bird.
To reach the secluded shoreline of Playa del Amor, guests must comfortably perform an open-water swim of approximately 75 yards (70 meters) from the boat through a volcanic surge cave. Due to the active currents and the mandatory use of a helmet and life jacket, this expedition requires a moderate level of physical fitness and is not recommended for non-swimmers, pregnant women, or individuals with mobility restrictions.
To prevent human disruption to the delicate marine life and bird nesting zones, authorities enforce a strict daily cap. Currently, Hidden Beach is accessible to only 116 visitors daily. We highly recommend booking your private tour well in advance through our puerto vallarta or Punta Mita advisors to secure your permit.
To ensure an unhurried yet highly structured experience, tours typically last about two hours plus transportation time, allowing for the scenic marine transit from Punta Mita, the cave swim, and dedicated wildlife observation.
Access to the islands hidden beach inside the crater is entirely dependent on reaching the cave during low tide. If sea conditions or high tides present a safety risk, our expert captains will pivot the expedition to explore the magnificent outer reefs and cavern systems of the islands instead.
While the beauty of the archipelago shifts with the seasons, specialized tours to Marietas Islands operate from December to March to perfectly coincide with the arrival of migratory marine life and optimal winter weather conditions in the bay.
We recommend arriving in your swimwear with a lightweight, sun-protective rash guard. Because the national park enforces strict conservation efforts to protect the reef, traditional chemical sunscreens—even those labeled biodegradable—are restricted before entering the water. Bring a towel and a change of dry clothes for the boat ride back to Punta Mita.
Under current federal regulations to preserve the sanctuary, professional cameras, drones, and selfie sticks are strictly off limits within the island's hidden beach. However, small waterproof action cameras (like GoPros) securely attached to a body mount are permitted, allowing you to capture your journey through the rock formations safely.
