When to Visit Puerto Vallarta with Your Family

Every season brings something the others don't, so the question is less about when to come and more about what you want to see.

December through March brings dry, warm days and cool evenings. It is also whale season, running December 8 to March 23, when humpbacks arrive in the bay to calve.

July through October brings the rain, usually in short afternoon storms. That rain is what fills the Sierra Madre, so the waterfalls, jungle river pools, and natural water slides run in these months. Sea turtle releases happen in the same season. Flights and hotels are often cheaper too, which is worth knowing if you are booking for four or five people.

April, May, and November are dry and warm, and they suit families who want beach days without the afternoon rain.

Where to Stay in Puerto Vallarta with Kids

Where you stay decides how much of each day goes to travel.

Nuevo Vallarta is the resort strip north of the airport, with wide beaches and most of the all-inclusives. It is also the closest zone to our Marine Mammal Center, so dolphin mornings are short.

The Hotel Zone sits between the two and works well if you plan to move around, since it is roughly equidistant from everything. The Romantic Zone has the most character, with cobblestone streets and hills that suit families with older kids who like to walk to dinner. If you are traveling with a small child, a carrier will serve you better than a stroller here.

Punta Mita, at the northern tip of the bay, gives the shortest boat crossing to the Marietas Islands.

How Families Get Around Puerto Vallarta

You do not need a rental car here. Car seats are rarely included, and the streets near the Malecón are made for walking rather than parking.

Taxis are metered by zone and inexpensive across the hotel zone. Agree the zone before you set off. Uber works in the city, though pickups are not allowed at the airport curb.

The local buses run constantly and cost very little. They work well with older kids, and they are easier without a stroller.

Drink bottled water. Every hotel and restaurant provides it, and it is the one adjustment worth making from day one.

Check the beach flags. Beaches inside the bay are patrolled and the flag system is posted daily, so take a look before anyone runs in.

Cover up rather than reapply. The sun here is stronger than most visitors expect, and rash guards, long-sleeved swim tops, and hats hold up better than anything you put on skin.

Agree a meeting point. The Malecón and the markets get busy, so pick a landmark with older kids before you set off.
